Year 3,4,5,and 6 Cultural Unit on Venezia

 Years  3 & 4    5  & 6    Cultural Unit   on  Venezia

Venezia,  is a city built on a group of islands connected by bridges. The city was not built directly on the land of the islands but on wooden stilts. The wooden stilts were the foundations of fisherman’s houses and the idea was used to support the entire city. There are millions of wooden piles under the city

Venezia was built approximately 1,500 years ago and is made up of 118 islands. There are 417 bridges which cross 177 canals.

Venezia ‘s biggest canal is the Grand Canal, which is 3.8 km long, 60 to 90 m wide and 5 m deep . The Grand Canal is lined with 170 beautiful buildings and many were palaces.

People arrive in Venezia by a long bridge, by train or by car. You must leave your vehicles and travel around the city by foot or boat.

One of the most recognizable symbols of Venezia are gondolas. Each gondola is made of eight different types of wood ,is 11 meters long and it weights almost 600 kilos.  There are about 350 gondolas and 400 gondolieri in the city.  Venezia  employed its first female gondolieri in 2010

You may also travel around by a vaporetto,[ a water bus] which travels along the Grand Canal, a traghetto [a 2 man gondola] or water taxi.

Piazza San Marco and the magnificent San Marco Church is the focus of the city. The famous San Marco bell tower, or campanile, was built in the 12th century. It is 98,6 metres tall, and you have the best view of Venezia  from the top of the tower

In the last 50 years the population of Venezia has dropped from 120,000 to 60,000,however there are millions of visitors each year.

An engineering project is underway to control the tides that result in a phenomena called acqua alta when tides are 20 cm above regular height. The town floods when this occurs and the project involves creating movable barriers that will stop the flooding.

After reading this comprehension  with your partner discuss the questions and complete task in your Venezia booklet

Term 4 Italian Assembly 2016

Term 4  Italian Assembly 2016

Eliza   Bevenuti alla Presentazione Italiana   Welcome to our 2nd Italian Assembly. In our quick presentation we will try to show you a snippet of what we have learnt in Italian in Term 3.  Don’t forget to see our video collage of pictures at the end

Year 1

Eliza During Term 3 the Year One’s had only 4 lessons since Signora was on leave. They enjoyed listening to the story “Aiuto un ” which helped them make a book about their Famiglia with lots of pictures, about all their family, even aunts and cousins. They liked reading their book to the class.

Cleo Year One’s worked really hard to make our 2 Art Piece’s on the Seasons Autunno Autumn and Inverno Winter.  We painted Autumn leaves and placed them on the letters of the word Autumn.

Angus We also made an amazing Snowflake picture. This took lots of time for we folded circles and made little cuts. I was surprised that the little cuts that I did on my circle made a beautiful snowflake.  Every snowflake was different. Angus

Year 2

Eleni The Year 2’s  also did an art piece about the Seasons Primavera Spring and Estate Summer.  Like the Year 1’s it also took us 3 hours to finish our pictures. We made summer leaves by doing bark rubbings.

Freya  We carefully coloured, cut and placed flowers in a vase, to create our beautiful summer flowers picture. I loved colouring and cutting out my beautiful flowers- Freya

Henry During lessons we also listened to a story which helped us learn to read, write and name fruit in Italian. We have loved pretending to be a shop keeper and a customer. We can now go shopping and ask for fruit in Italian.

  Year 3

Adele The Year 3’s completed a mini unit of Olympics. We learnt to name many sports and could answer the questions about our favourite sport

Jack Four lessons in Italian in Term 2 and 3 were dedicated to creating our Forest at Night picture for the art show. We blended colours to make our sunset or moonlight background. We did pencil drawings of trees and carefully painted the trees with black paint.

Year 4

Emmanuelle Listening to “La Sfilata di Moda” [Fashion Parade] audio story helped us to learn to name summer and winter clothing. We have played games especially on the Interactive whiteboard to help us to read and write clothing words. We are making clothing puppets and writing a Fashion Parade puppet show.

Ella Our Earth from Space art piece was great fun to do in Italian lessons. We selected a continent view of earth and used water pastels to colour the image. We blended the colours using water, and added cloud patterns then placed our earth on a black card. Using glitter glue to make stars, made it look like our planet was really in space. Ella

Year 5/6

Anna The Olympics and our Art Show piece was the focus of Term 3 Italian lessons. We learnt to name Olympic Sports by playing games and reading information about favourite sports.  We researched our favourite Olympian. Our assessment task was to create a mini poster about our favourite Olympian describing their physical features, interest and the medals they have won. My Mini poster was about my cousin ___________ who ___________________________________________________

Jacob Art in Italian was so much fun.  Our Art piece was based on the diversity of Italian landscapes.  We chose between the Tuscan countryside, coastal views of Positano and images of the volcano of Mt Etna.

We drew our favourite landscapes, practiced our knowledge of perspective, and used water based crayons, paint and glitter to finish our pictures.

We hope you like watching our picture Collage presentation.

Landscapes of Italy

The Year Five and Six students’ Italian Art piece is linked with the theme of ‘Earth and Environment’. Italian landscapes are diverse and this was the theme of their art works.

Art in Italian was so much fun. We created a picture of place in Italy by drawing, painting and adding final touches with glitter.  Alessia

The students viewed and discussed images of the Tuscan countryside, coastal images of Positano and views of the volcano Mt Etna. They selected one of these landscapes as the focus of their painting. All images enabled the students to practice the skill of perspective drawing.

The students drew their picture and used a variety of techniques to colour their art piece. Some used water based crayons, which could blend colours, others used pencils or paint with paper collage.

The Earth in Space    Year 4

The Year Four Students Italian art piece linked with both the theme of ‘Earth and Environment’ and the Inquiry Unit ‘Night /Day and Solar System’.

I liked using pastels to colour different parts of the world. Archie

I enjoyed creating my Earth masterpiece by blending colours.

Using glitter glue to make stars, made it look like our planet was really in space. Ella

The students viewed photos and images taken of the earth from the International Space Station. They discussed features such as continents, weather systems (particularly clouds) and even lights that can be seen from Space.

To create the ‘Earth from space’ image, they selected a continent view of earth and used water pastels to colour their image. They then blended the colours using water, and added cloud patterns to their image of the Earth. They placed their Earth on a black card and added stars to create the image of the Earth floating in space.

Semester 2 2016 Art Show

The Forest at Night   Year 3

The Year Three Students’ Italian art piece is linked with both the ‘Earth and Environment’ theme and the Inquriy Unit ‘Night /Day and Solar System’.

I liked using different blues to make the background of my picture. Ollie

I really enjoyed using light and dark shades of colour when painting around my moon. Ilaria

It was fun doing our own designs of our special trees. Patrick

The students discussed images of the forest at night and noted that different perspectives created unique views of the trees. The also noticed that the trees reflected different colours in the moonlight and at sunset.

The students decided whether the moon or the sun would be the focus of their picture, and this determined the background colours of their art work. Their knowledge of the colour wheel assisted them in creating a blended colour backdrop of the forest. They did pencil drawings of their trees and finally carefully painted them with black paint
